Ethan Hawke confirmed in a recent interview that he, Julie Delpy, and Richard Linklater will be filming a third film in the “Before Sun-” series this summer. For any fans of the films this has to be the best news you’ve gotten all week.
For those that might not know, ‘Before Sunrise’ was made in 1995. It was the story of two european tourists spending a single day with each other. The entire film is them walking around Vienna talking about life. Talking about life is not some cute statement being made to describe this film. THEY TALK ABOUT EVERYTHING. They share. They argue. They absolutely fall in love. Characters in romantic comedies fall in love all the time and its never really clear why. This is not the case here.
In 2005 they made “Before Sunset.” The film is set nine years later as well when our two characters meet again. The two characters have changed and the film is all about that. They spend another day talking and trying to reconnect.
One of the best decisions of my movie watching life was to wait 5 years in between watching the the second film after finally getting around to seeing the first. You can sit and watch the sequel and feel how you yourself have changed. This is what makes the news of a third installment so exciting. I want to learn more about myself.
I can not recommend these movies more. I will absolutely suggest that you give yourself some time in between them. I did five years but a few weeks or months would be a smart move.
