Daredevil Moving Back to Marvel/Disney

Daredevil is officially going to be shifting from 20th Century Fox, where the Ben Affleck film and Elektra spinoff was made, to Disney.  It appears as though the character extension that Peter wrote about a few weeks ago, was firmly rejected by Disney, the minute 20th Century Fox was unwillingly to trade the rights of Silver Surfer and Galactus to Disney for an extension past October 10th on Daredevil.  This is 90% great, and 10% kinda shitty.

90% Great:  Marvel knows it characters, so I am confident that they will be able to make a better Daredevil film than any outside company ever could.

10% Kinda Shitty: Marvel probably has NO room for a Daredevil reboot on their docket.  They are so preoccupied with Avenger-centric films and characters and the cosmic stuff, that a gritty character like Daredevil (who often does not overlap into Avenger-land) really does not have a place in that world cinematically.  Also, it kinda sounded like Joe Carnahan’s take on Daredevil as more of a pulpy and dark 70’s styled film would be really cool.

Silver Lining: Daredevil would be perfect for a frickin TV show.  So far, the only characters that Marvel licensed out that have come back are Punisher, Blade and Daredevil.  They all live in NYC, have mostly darker stories, and have crossed paths numerous times.  Take characters like them and put them on TV in a world that acknowledges the cinematic universe and exists within it, but deals with the seedier side of the universe.  They all work as procedurals with overarching plotlines and I think it’d be cool for them to have shows that occasionally overlap like Doctor Who and Torchwood etc.  Only issue is Disney doesn’t really have a brand to release darker content anymore, nor a network to do it.  None of those would make sense on ABC which is family and femme-centric.  Disney needs to just make a branded network similar to Disney XD, but for adult males or something.

I hope Marvel does SOMETHING with Daredevil, cause he’s too cool to have nothing come out other than that shitburger movie.

Avengers 2 is Happening the Way it Should

Joss Whedon has been signed on to write and direct Avengers 2.  We can now all breathe a bit easier.  Not only will he be shepherding the Avenger franchise, but he’s also being brought along to help flesh out the Marvel TV Universe.  They haven’t done anything with the TV verse yet, so taking Whedon’s already stellar TV past and connections, he will be a lot better at helping bring that world along well.

I am pleased.

I would love it if Marvel took some of their darker characters and retrofitted them for TV, like Punisher and Daredevil (especially with his rights likely reverting back to Disney).

Anthony Mackie as Falcon?

It is being reported that Marvel is actively in negotiations for Anthony Mackie to play the character of Falcon in Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

Almost anything being reported on the Marvel front these days ends up happening so I’m going to assume this is going to happen.  Here is what you get by incorporating Falcon into Captain America:

-You get a black character

-You get people to chill on asking for Black Panther

-You get a character that will require less of an origin story than B.P. does

-You get a character who will be introduced into the new Avengers cartoon as the eyes of the viewer.  So here you are going to get a bunch of kids who see themselves as him, happy to see him in a movie.

While I would rather see Black Panther become an Avenger over Falcon, I think Anthony Mackie can bring the requisite coolness to a character like this, and it will also flesh out the Captain America world more.  Considering all his buddies are dead (minus Bucky), this helps keep his movie-verse active.  Only issue now is what happens with Bucky.  Lets assume Chris Evans and Mackie are the good guys this time, can Sebastian Stan really hold his own this time around? I guess we’ll have to wait and find out.

Truth or Daredevil

Last month we discussed the proposed Daredevil reboot that Fox has been trying to get off the ground. Word is now that David Slade has left the project due to the hurried schedule the studio has been pushing for it. They are rushing it because if it doesn’t get made soon, the rights would revert back to Marvel.

If that happened everyone in the world would be happy and Fox can’t allow that.

Marvel Studios is Brilliant

We’ve been talking a whole lot about Black Panther recently, but it seems Marvel has pulled a bit of a switcher-oo on us. The BP may still be happening but coming in 2014 is a film adaptation of ‘Guardians of the Galaxy.’ This is an absolutely brilliant move. Why?

Because you can’t name a single member of the team.

The Newest Marvel Film Franchise Is?

The Guardians of the Galaxy.

According to one of the more reputable film sites Latino Review, they are reporting that not only is the second Marvel film of 2014 to be Guardians of the Galaxy, but it will also feature Thanos.  Thanos we all know will be the villain of the next Avengers film.  This film would be based on the 2008 lineup of Guardians.

I don’t know if this is true yet, because Disney hasn’t spoken on the issue yet, but I can definitely see it.  The best stuff about Thor was the Asgard stuff, and with Marvel, so much of what they will be doing in Avengers films is otherworldly, so why not add a bit more context to the cosmic layer of the Marvel Film Universe?  My only issues:

-Guardians are made up of second and third tier characters, and theres very little familiarity with the product.

-I hope it doesn’t come at the cost of the Black Panther film.  It could very well be the Avengers’ Batman.  Shoehorning him into the sequel really doesn’t work if you are focusing so much on the expansion of the cosmic stuff.  The only thing that would make sense at this point would be putting him in the next Captain America film as Cap is now in the modern day and his shield is made of Vibranium which is found is Wakanda.  I wouldn’t love that cause the tonal differences of Cap and BP are very different.  It’s like Superman and Batman.  It would take a very deft hand to meld those two.

Again, this is all unconfirmed at this point, but it’s worth thinking about.

The Man Without Fear Should Terrify Marvel

The Ben Affleck starring ‘Daredevil’ was the first Marvel failure. The first two ‘Blade’ films came out with some success, though few knew its comic origins. ‘X-men’ blew everyone away showing the potential of a comic based film. ‘Spider-man’ destroyed expectations.

After DD was ‘Hulk’, ‘Fantastic Four’, ‘Blade: Trinity’, ‘The Punisher’, and a continued list of disappointments until ‘Iron Man.’ Now they want to try it again.

Captain America 2 and Keeping My Inner Fanboy At Bay

So Captain America 2 finally has a director and it’s not Joe Johnston, who did a masterful job.  It’s Joe and Anthony Russo.  Directors of many episodes of Arrested Developed, Executive Producers of Happy Endings and Community (two of the funniest shows on tv), and Directors of You, Me, and Dupree, an utterly useless and unfunny Owen Wilson vehicle.
