Return of the Living Dead

The 80s were a great time for zombie movies and horror movies in general. The tone started to skew more toward fun and comedy than the bleak fare of the 70s. There is no better example of this than The Return of the Living Dead. Return which came out in 1985, the same year that Romero completed his Dead Trilogy (and you know how much I love trilogies). Audiences embraced the lighthearted Return much more than the grim and serious Day. Return, an unofficial sequel to Night of the Living Dead, is just so much fun. It is a great movie to put on during a party. It’s one of the best horror comedies of all time (right up there with American Werewolf in London), and if you haven’t seen it, give it a watch, it’s even on Youtube below:

Six Great Trilogies You May Not Have Seen

I have always loved the idea of a movie trilogy (probably because I was such a Star Wars kid), they always seemed like complete works of art. This is part of the reason why I am so fine with the Hobbit becoming a trilogy. I decided to compile this list of some great movie trilogies that might not jump to your mind when talking about trilogies. So I didn’t include stuff like the Godfather, The Matrix, Lord of the Rings, or Back to the Future etc, because those are pretty obvious. The first three are unofficial trilogies, they have the same director and thematic material, but they don’t share characters (If only At World’s End was out, I would definitely have added The Three Flavours Cornetto Trilogy). One thing that most trilogies share is that the third entry is usually the weakest (Godfather, Spider Man, X-men etc). I have been thinking about this phenomenon for a while. It could be that filmmakers get lazy when they get to the third entry, they ran out of story to tell, or any other number of things. While movies fail for myriad reasons, if there is actually a statistical difference with the reception of the third entries, I believe I’ve figured out a big reason for this. Imagine a theoretically successful movie that has the potential to be a franchise. The sequel is made. This sequel can either be successful or not. If it is not successful, then it is less likely that a third film will be made. Therefore, when you think about trilogies that have weak third films, that isn’t that surprising when you factor in the potential trilogies that had weak second films and thus weren’t able to complete the trilogy (think Conan, Ghostbusters etc). Regardless, on to the trilogies.

Mama Trailer 2

I still think Mama looks good. Guillermo Del Toro presents a movie with Jessica Chastain, Jaime Lannister, and two creepy kids, I’m sold. You guys are a bunch of dummies. I mean when when was the last time we have gotten burned by a new horror movie? Oh, all the time… that’s right…

The Remake of Carrie gets a Teaser Trailer

I’m not completely convinced that Carrie needs to be remade, but I’ll be damned if this teaser trailer isn’t great. Looks like they are going to a bigger finale than the original which seems appropriate. Let’s just hope the rest of the movie lives up to the promise of this teaser.

Fake Movie Friday – Cherry Goo Goo

I’m going to out crazy Ashley and Tigs with this one. I usually think about my fake movie fridays when I’m going to bed. I came up with this one when I was visiting my brother on the west coast, I was jet lagged and had visited a bunch of wineries, so I ended up thinking about stuff and then continued to think about my fake movie in my dream. So basically this is a drunken dream.

New The World’s End Poster

A new Poster for The Word’s End was just posted. It’s pretty cool, but honestly it could have just been text that said “A Film By Edgar Wright” and I’d buy a ticket.

New Pacific Rim Poster

It looks like this poster is a Comic Con exclusive. It’s beautiful, and it is making me way too impatient for summer of next year. I really wish I was going to Comic Con on Friday, apparently Del Toro is signing these bad boys at 2pm, curses!

Tombs of the Blind Dead

So we are finally post Night of the Living Dead. Tombs of the Blind Dead is the first of the Blind Dead series and has three sequels, all pretty decent flicks. The zombies in this one have a cool backstory- in the middle ages, the Knights Templar begin using black magic in an attempt to gain eternal life, they were killed for their crimes and crows ate their eyes out, they of course are resurrected and start to kill. It’s a great series, but unfortunately, just like a lot of other 70s grindhouse movies, it contains a lot of rape. Other than that, it is totally worth checking out.
