Jason Momoa cast in Guardians of the Galaxy

The rumor is that Jason Momoa has been cast as Drax in James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy. This seems like dead on casting to me based. My only reservation is I really only know him from Game of Thrones, so I haven’t really seen him speak English… I’m not too worried because critics seemed to like him in Bullet in the Head, and from my recollection of the comic, Drax wasn’t overly chatty. If this turns out to be true, it would be in keeping with Marvel’s track record of giving actors their first really big break.

The Star of Guardians of the Galaxy Will Be…

Chris Pratt.

Chris Pratt will be starring as the half-human lead in the weird Marvel space-epic, Guardians of the Galaxy.  Apparently every single white male on earth tested for this part, and at no point did Chris Pratt’s name come up, but he’s an inspired choice.  He’s the funniest guy in nearly everything he’s in, most girls seem to think he’s awesome (he is), and he did his “serious” turn in Zero Dark Thirty as a badass army dude, so I think this will work out really well.

I don’t know who is overseeing a lot of the casting decisions at Marvel, but they are crushing it.  They don’t break the bank on any actors, but they get people who’ll become stars and wrap them into 4-6 picture deals before their asking price skyrockets.

Smart. Smart. Smart.

James Gunn directing and Chris Pratt starring in a Marvel Space Action Film? Win.

Gunn Loaded for GoTG

James Gunn is confirmed for ‘Guardians of the Galaxy!’ Thankfully it has a release date of August 2014, so he has plenty of time to rewrite it with his own voice, Joss can help out, and take is time planning the film. So we don’t have a space epic that looks like ‘Green Lantern.’

In the director’s own words

Directing the Guardians

Last month at Comic-Con Marvel announced their plans for bringing the ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ into the unified movie universe. Of course this was done without a director on board but it’s Marvel and we trust them. They’ve since released a short logline and a list of possible directors.

Marvel Studios is Brilliant

We’ve been talking a whole lot about Black Panther recently, but it seems Marvel has pulled a bit of a switcher-oo on us. The BP may still be happening but coming in 2014 is a film adaptation of ‘Guardians of the Galaxy.’ This is an absolutely brilliant move. Why?

Because you can’t name a single member of the team.

The Newest Marvel Film Franchise Is?

The Guardians of the Galaxy.

According to one of the more reputable film sites Latino Review, they are reporting that not only is the second Marvel film of 2014 to be Guardians of the Galaxy, but it will also feature Thanos.  Thanos we all know will be the villain of the next Avengers film.  This film would be based on the 2008 lineup of Guardians.

I don’t know if this is true yet, because Disney hasn’t spoken on the issue yet, but I can definitely see it.  The best stuff about Thor was the Asgard stuff, and with Marvel, so much of what they will be doing in Avengers films is otherworldly, so why not add a bit more context to the cosmic layer of the Marvel Film Universe?  My only issues:

-Guardians are made up of second and third tier characters, and theres very little familiarity with the product.

-I hope it doesn’t come at the cost of the Black Panther film.  It could very well be the Avengers’ Batman.  Shoehorning him into the sequel really doesn’t work if you are focusing so much on the expansion of the cosmic stuff.  The only thing that would make sense at this point would be putting him in the next Captain America film as Cap is now in the modern day and his shield is made of Vibranium which is found is Wakanda.  I wouldn’t love that cause the tonal differences of Cap and BP are very different.  It’s like Superman and Batman.  It would take a very deft hand to meld those two.

Again, this is all unconfirmed at this point, but it’s worth thinking about.
