135 Shots That Will Restore Your Faith in Cinema

At Movie Movie Podcast, sometimes it seems like we bitch more about movies than we applaud them.  It seems that way because its true.  We love movies but wish that the people making them would aspire to a higher standard.

That being said, the website Flavorwire put together a short video inter-cutting some of the best shots in the history of film and put it to parts of Clint Mansell’s soundtrack from the incredible film, Moon.  This is something that I think is worth watching because it reminds you that films can still be great and moving. We just need people willing to make them that way.

The oscars should just use this from now on when they need to put a montage together.

Hunger Games Casting is Catching Fire

Now that The Hunger Games: Catching Fire has cast Philip Seymour Hoffman as Plutarch and Jena Malone as Johanna (which is perfect in my opinion), it appears as though the rest of the dominoes are starting to fall into place.

It is being reported that even though everyone from Taylor Kitsch to Garrett Hedlund had been in the running for the role of fan-favorite Finnick Odair, it looks like Sam Clafin is getting the offer.  Clafin has already been in two big budget films (Pirates 4/Snow White and the Huntsman), but was never really one of the focal points.  The role of Finnick in this film is a relatively meaty one, and based on his look, I think this is something he can pull off.

In even better news it looks like veteran character actors Melissa Leo (fresh off a hilarious turn in last weeks Louie) and Tony Shaloub have also been offered the roles of Mags and Beetee respectively.  If they accept this franchise will have an interesting mix of younger untested talent and seasoned veteran actors, none of which command a crazy paycheck.  While I am not crazy about the rushed production schedule, it looks like Francis Lawrence and Lionsgate are putting together a world that will rival some of the great sci-fi franchises of the last 30 years.

I’m excited to see how it all plays out.

Andrew Stanton Gets His Punishment

It was really only a matter of time until this news came out. Andrew Stanton is in talks with Disney to make a sequel to ‘Finding Nemo.’ After costing the Mouse House millions of dollars with ‘John Carter’ he owes them.

Wes Anderson/Johnny Depp & The Case of Deja Va

So fresh off the heels of the fantastic Moonrise Kingdom, Wes Anderson has announced he’s ready to start working on his next film which he plans to shoot in Europe.  All we know about it to this point is that it is going to be titled The Grand Budapest Hotel and it will star Johnny Depp.

I like this even though I feel like I’ve seen this already

Why do I like this?

-Because I like everything Wes Anderson has made.  Even Darjeeling Limited, which is my least favorite film, is still good, and breathed some new life and actors into Anderson’s familiar film formulas.

-Because like Woody Allen’s recent infatuation with Europe I think the change of scenery (like his turn at Animation) will enliven Anderson, and he’ll find a way to make Europe look more beautiful than it already looks.

-Because Anderson can remind us that Johnny Depp used to be more than just a tentpole adventure hero.  The subtlety of Wes Anderson’s direction should elicit one of the better performances of Depp’s last 10 years.

-Because he plans on filling the film with Bill Murray and other familiar faces.

I think you are as excited about this film as you are excited about Wes Anderson films in general.  I’m sold.

Anthony Mackie as Falcon?

It is being reported that Marvel is actively in negotiations for Anthony Mackie to play the character of Falcon in Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

Almost anything being reported on the Marvel front these days ends up happening so I’m going to assume this is going to happen.  Here is what you get by incorporating Falcon into Captain America:

-You get a black character

-You get people to chill on asking for Black Panther

-You get a character that will require less of an origin story than B.P. does

-You get a character who will be introduced into the new Avengers cartoon as the eyes of the viewer.  So here you are going to get a bunch of kids who see themselves as him, happy to see him in a movie.

While I would rather see Black Panther become an Avenger over Falcon, I think Anthony Mackie can bring the requisite coolness to a character like this, and it will also flesh out the Captain America world more.  Considering all his buddies are dead (minus Bucky), this helps keep his movie-verse active.  Only issue now is what happens with Bucky.  Lets assume Chris Evans and Mackie are the good guys this time, can Sebastian Stan really hold his own this time around? I guess we’ll have to wait and find out.

The World’s End Begins

Take a look at the first slightly cryptic poster for ‘The World’s End.’

It’s the third film in the “Three Flavors of Cornetto Trilogy.” Written by Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright it is proceeded by ‘Shaun of the Dead’ and ‘Hot Fuzz.’ Pegg and Nick Frost star while Wright directs.

I’m so excited. I would pre-order a ticket now if I could
